Meet the Instructor: Olivia Hanson’s Perspective on Reentry

Olivia Hanson, one of Operation New Hope's Career Development instructors.

Meet Olivia Hanson, a dedicated instructor at Operation New Hope’s Space Coast office, where people returning from incarceration receive the support they need to achieve stability and success. Operation New Hope is a nonprofit organization that helps individuals transform their lives through the nationally-recognized Ready4Work program. This three-week learning experience provides job readiness training, technology skills, direct connections to employment opportunities, and other free services.

As a Career Development Instructor, Olivia leads classroom instruction focused on building essential skills for today’s job market, including resume writing, professional communication, and digital literacy. With a background in administrative and intake work and a personal connection to the challenges of reentry, Olivia brings both compassion and practical experience to the classroom. She plays a vital role in helping participants gain confidence, develop critical skills, and prepare for new opportunities as they navigate life after incarceration.

A Personal Mission

For Olivia, this work is deeply personal. Several of her family members have been impacted by the justice system, including one relative whose journey from incarceration to becoming a successful business owner serves as a powerful example of resilience. His story, along with the support he provided Olivia during her early adulthood, inspired her to become part of the solution for others trying to rebuild their lives.

“My father’s story had a profound impact on me,” Olivia shared. “When he returned home from Operation Desert Storm, he had nowhere to go and ended up living in his car before also becoming justice involved. Watching him rebuild taught me how crucial support and opportunity really are.”

Since joining ONH at the start of 2024, Olivia has brought years of experience working with underserved populations, along with a background in data analytics and volunteer service, to the Space Coast team. “Transitioning into reentry services felt like a natural progression,” she explained. “I wanted to continue doing meaningful work that directly impacts those who need support the most.” She was especially drawn to Operation New Hope’s mission, adding, “I was thrilled to discover that programs like this exist to support individuals who may not have the resources or knowledge to take those first crucial steps forward.”

In her first role at Operation New Hope, Olivia served as an Intake Specialist, helping potential clients review eligibility requirements and enroll in the Ready4Work program, while also building partnerships with local organizations across Brevard County. She recently transitioned to the Career Development team, a role that aligns with both her professional strengths and her passion for supporting formerly incarcerated individuals through education and encouragement.

What Clients Learn in Ready4Work

The Ready4Work program is designed to remove the barriers that often prevent people returning from incarceration from achieving stability. Through a holistic blend of job training, life skills, transitional housing, and support services, clients are equipped to step confidently into the workforce and rebuild their lives.

Each lesson is hands-on and practical. Olivia often incorporates videos and activities to help clients feel more comfortable applying what they have learned, especially those who may have never used a computer before.

“We meet a wide range of experience levels,” Olivia explained. “But we always help clients recognize how they already use technology in everyday life, especially on their phones. From there, we guide them in using those tools for professional and personal growth.”

Beyond hard skills, Ready4Work also focuses on soft skills like accountability, punctuality, communication, and confidence, which are qualities that are critical to succeeding in any work environment.

Day in the Life of a CD Instructor

Olivia’s days are filled with both structure and flexibility, allowing her to adapt her teaching to the unique needs of each class. She spends time preparing materials, leading interactive lessons, and offering individual support to clients who need extra help. She also celebrates the small victories, whether it is someone arriving on time, successfully logging into email for the first time, or completing a resume they are proud of.

“I strive to encourage clients every day by acknowledging both their big and small achievements,” she said. “Even something like showing up on time demonstrates reliability, an essential workforce skill. I make sure to point that out and help them build confidence with each step.”

Why Reentry Support Matters

Reentry is a crucial part of building stronger, safer communities. For many individuals returning home after incarceration, resources, guidance, and basic support have long been absent. Programs like Ready4Work fill that gap by offering not only practical tools but also hope.

“Reentry plays a vital role in the fabric of our society,” Olivia shared. “Many of our clients want to change, but they have never had access to the knowledge, tools, or support they need. Our job is to be that support system, offering judgment-free support and focusing on progress.”

She emphasizes that instructors, case managers, and job coaches all work together to help clients gain confidence, overcome barriers, and reach meaningful employment. More than anything, she hopes clients leave her class knowing they are not alone.

“There are people here who truly want to see you succeed,” she said. “If you are willing to put in the effort, we will meet you with the support and acceptance you need to keep moving forward. Your past does not have to define your future.”

Restoring Confidence Through Connection

One of the most rewarding moments for Olivia came when a client who had struggled with technology began to flourish in her class. He proudly shared his progress with his family, and his confidence grew with every new skill he mastered.

“Hearing how excited he was, and knowing he shared it with loved ones, made me realize how powerful this work really is,” Olivia said. “It reminded me that we’re not just teaching skills—we’re restoring belief in what’s possible. It’s a privilege to walk alongside our clients as they begin to believe in themselves again.”

Meet Maria Maldonado Gutierrez: Prioritizing Mental Health for Reentry Success

Mental Health Therapist, Maria Maldonado Gutierrez.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and at Operation New Hope, we know that mental health support is essential for successful reentry. To honor this vital connection, we’re spotlighting Maria Maldonado Gutierrez, a licensed Mental Health Therapist who brings compassion, expertise, and creativity to our Orlando team.

Maria plays a key role in supporting our Ready4Work clients, offering free, individualized care for up to 12 months. Each participant in the program is assigned a licensed therapist who provides one-on-one counseling, group support, and personalized care. These services are foundational to helping individuals transition back into their communities and rebuild their lives with confidence.

At Operation New Hope, we recognize that 80% of those we serve are working to overcome substance use disorders and significant trauma. That’s why our reentry programming provides comprehensive, recovery-oriented, trauma-informed, and equity-based mental health resources. These services are designed to prevent relapse, reduce recidivism, and foster long-term self-sufficiency.

Maria is a shining example of this approach in action. As our Spanish-speaking therapist in Orlando, she creates a welcoming, safe space where clients feel understood and empowered. She meets people where they are, offering culturally responsive care and translating when needed to ensure every client is heard. Thanks to her efforts, attendance in our Recovery Support Groups has grown, with clients now voluntarily participating and encouraging others to join.

Maria also makes the space her own, decorating the office walls with mental health facts and resources to foster an uplifting environment. Her thoughtful presence and consistent support embody the heart of our mission at Operation New Hope, which is to provide second chances and holistic support that empower people to thrive after incarceration.

We sat down with Maria to learn more about her journey and
her insight into the connection between mental health and reentry:

What led you to this work?
Maria originally planned to become a lawyer to help individuals struggling with employment, but her path shifted toward social work. After years working in inpatient and outpatient mental health and substance abuse treatment, she joined ONH to make a difference in the reentry space.

What does a typical day look like for you at ONH?
“Depending on the day, I am usually working on completing mental health triage, biopsychosocial assessments, individual counseling, or facilitating group sessions. Providing one-on-one therapy is one of my favorite parts of what I do.”

What are some common mental health challenges that returning citizens face?
“Returning citizens often face elevated stress due to uncertainty about the future, limited support networks, and financial constraints while managing multiple obligations. Some clients received mental health services while incarcerated and need continued care after release, while others have never had any kind of mental health treatment and are navigating their transition back into society. One common challenge in the reentry process is regulating responses to stress. Incarceration can lead to long-term dysregulation, with symptoms like hypervigilance manifesting in behaviors. At ONH, we provide individualized treatment to meet clients where they are. This might include breathing exercises, mindfulness, improving interpersonal relationships, or working through past traumatic experiences.”

How does access to mental health care support a successful reentry journey?
“Access to mental health care supports reentry by helping clients develop realistic expectations and effective coping strategies to navigate overwhelming changes.”

What is the most fulfilling part of your job?
“Seeing people recognize their value and accept a second chance is the most rewarding part of what I do.”

What do you wish more people understood about the link between mental health and involvement in the justice system?
“I wish more people understood that mental health conditions can significantly affect how individuals function, sometimes resulting in justice system involvement. Life’s complexities influence our responses, and without support, this can lead to poor outcomes & decision-making. We as a society need a greater focus on prevention and overall well-being as ways to reduce issues like substance use.”

What simple strategies would you recommend to clients or anyone looking to take better care of their mental health?
“We all need to prioritize caring for our mental health. Recognizing the connection between the mind, body, and social relationships is key. Basic self-care practices include getting quality sleep, staying physically active, practicing gratitude, and building healthy social connections while maintaining personal boundaries.”

Our mental health support doesn’t stop at therapy. The year-long care includes group and individual counseling, transitional crisis interventions, AA/NA meetings, which help clients explore emotions, set goals, and develop strategies for meaningful change.

Discover the comprehensive, free, and holistic support offered to clients through our Ready4Work program.

However, Cindy and the team in Space Coast are able to help clients set up a payment plan with the Clerk of Court to get back on the road and get back to work. Thanks Cindy!

Shawn works closely with people during their final months of incarceration to create individualized transition plans that act as roadmaps for success by ensuring adequate housing, transportation, and job training for returning citizens. Shawn has a great attitude and we are lucky to have him on the team. Thanks Shawn!

Rookie of the Year - Cindy Bridges

Cindy is our Client Support Specialist at our Ready4Work Space Coast program location. Since joining the ONH family in July 2023, Cindy has made a significant impact helping clients regain their driver’s after incarceration. Many people don’t realize that often returning citizens have suspended licenses, not because of dangerous driving, but because of fines and fees they have been unable to pay while incarcerated. Without a license, people can’t drive to work to earn money they need to pay the fines and fees to get their licenses back. However, Cindy and the team in Space Coast are able to help clients set up a payment plan with the Clerk of Court to get back on the road and get back to work. Thanks Cindy!

Meet the Staff – Yolanda

Meet our Ready4Work Case Manager and Recovery Support Group Facilitator – Yolanda Goodman. In 2022, Yolanda made the move from Illinois to Florida to join the Operation New Hope team, bringing with her a wealth of experience in teaching and case management.

Yolanda and the Ready4Work Case Management team deliver post-release services and individualized support to individuals working on rebuilding their lives after involvement with the criminal justice system. Yolanda describes herself and the other case managers as “the ground level and foundation” for returning citizens to help them land sustainable employment and finally self-sufficient.

As a second chance story herself, Yolanda brings a unique perspective to her clients impacted by certain challenges. By relating her own experiences to her clients’ problems she serves as a reminder that they are not alone and hope has not been lost.

Explore Yolanda’s perspective on what second chances truly mean as she passionately contributes to our mission in this Meet the Staff video.

Meet the Staff – RJ

Meet one of our Pre-release Case Managers – Ryan “RJ” James

RJ joined Operation New Hope in 2021 to be a beacon of hope for those going through trauma so that they can overcome life’s challenges. Working in collaboration with the Department of Corrections, RJ and the Ready4Release team deliver pre-release services to 30+ facilities across Florida. RJ is also the lead instructor of our Ready4Release Career Development Training at the St. Johns County Jail and is having a big impact helping people prepare for release. Don’t just take our word for it, here is some recent feedback from clients about the impact RJ is making:

  • “The class I was involved with and the instructor RJ has helped me more in the last week than anyone has helped me in my life.”
  • “Thank you for giving us Mr. RJ! He’s a really good guy and he’s helped me personally a few times before. Thank you for giving us a chance to make a change.”

Kaley Vontz Promoted to Community Engagement Manager https://operationnewhope.org/kaley-vontz-promoted-to-community-engagement-manager/ https://operationnewhope.org/kaley-vontz-promoted-to-community-engagement-manager/#respond Tue, 06 Jun 2023 18:05:27 +0000 https://operationnewhope.org/?p=11647

Kaley Vontz Promoted to Community Engagement Manager

Operation New Hope is pleased to announce that Kaley Vontz has been promoted to Community Engagement Manager. In this new role, Kaley will be responsible for increasing awareness of our mission and cultivating relationships to encourage support, partnerships, and engagement.

Kaley is a Jacksonville native who grew up at the beach and graduated from Episcopal School of Jacksonville.  Like many on our team, she has a story of growth here at Operation New Hope. Kaley joined the team as an intern 3 years ago learning about the organization’s Marketing and Communications during the summer before her final year at Wake Forest University. After graduating college, Kaley has done a phenomenal job as our Grants and Donor Relations Coordinator, building a robust contact management platform, helping design our new website, and developing a winning grants management system.

During the last two years, Kaley has acquired a strong understanding of fund development and community engagement and helped increase our message of hope. We are excited to see her put all she has learned into action. We sat down with Kaley to ask her about her plans for continuing to grow with the organization in her new role, and here is what she shared:

• How have you grown professionally while on our team?
I started at Operation New Hope as a Social Media and Marketing Intern in the summer of 2020 and returned as a Grants and Donor Relations Coordinator after graduation in the summer of 2021. Going on my third year at the organization, I feel confident taking on my new role, and I am excited to learn more about the world of fund development. I am so happy to work at an organization that believes in the growth of their employees. Also, I recently was accepted to Leadership Jacksonville’s Next Gen Program 2023, where I am learning alongside other young professionals about what it means to be an emerging leader in Jacksonville. I am excited for the possibilities to come in my new role!

• Who are some of your biggest inspirations within the company?
I am lucky enough to be Kevin Gay’s niece, so I grew up hearing all about Operation New Hope. To know Kevin is to be inspired by Kevin! He leads with passion and by example effortlessly. He inspired me to learn more about the criminal justice system as I grew older, and I am honored to even attempt to carry on his legacy at ONH.

• What’s the most unique part about working here at Operation New Hope?
It’s truly a rewarding job. You get to to see the direct impact of your work every day, which is something that is hard to come by. Everyone here is extremely dedicated to their job, and it’s seen in the success of our clients and the smiles on their face.

• What is one of the most significant lessons you have learned so far?
Personally, one of the biggest lessons I have learned so far is the importance of saying hello and a friendly smile. Many of our clients have been deprived of genuine human connection for far too long, and I have really seen how something so simple as a hello makes such a big impact on someone’s day. Professionally, I’ve learned that there truly is no such thing as a bad question. Asking a question goes beyond getting the answer you thought you were looking for, and it could open a door that you didn’t even know was there. Most often, the answers to questions aren’t what we think they are, and usually, those are the best answers.

• What do you think are the best things about our community?
Jacksonville has an amazing sense of hope, probably instilled in us by loving the Jacksonville Jaguars. We are always looking towards the future, wanting the next best thing for our city. We all have the desire to achieve common good, which I think is great considering all of the wonderful nonprofits in our area. While there is a lot of work to be done in our community, I am confident that our community will do the best we can to address them.

• What does HOPE mean to you?
Hope is the desire for something more and something better, and the thing that you hold on to when times are hard. I see HOPE in our clients every day.

Please join us in congratulating Kaley!

CFO James Lee Completes Jim Moran Nonprofit Executive Program

Operation New Hope’s Chief Financial Officer James Lee recently completed the Jim Moran Institute For Global Entrepreneurship Nonprofit Executive Program. Focused on growth, leadership expertise, and financial success, the Nonprofit Executive Program examines business fundamentals, strategies, and best practices.

The mission of the Jim Moran Institute for Global Entrepreneurship is to cultivate, train and inspire entrepreneurial leaders through world-class executive education, applied training, public recognition and leading-edge research. A 1995 contribution from Jim and Jan Moran and JM Family Enterprises established the Jim Moran Institute for Global Entrepreneurship at the Florida State University College of Business with additional support through the years. Since 2011, further enhancements to the Jim Moran Institute and its outreach have been made possible by Jan Moran and The Jim Moran Foundation.

“The Jim Moran Institute for Global Entrepreneurship Nonprofit Executive Program was a world-class learning experience,” said James after completing the training. “The program did a great job preparing us to look for and capitalize on business opportunities, implement best practice management, and turn challenges into strategic advantages. I’m thankful for this opportunity and grateful for the Jim Moran Foundation’s continued support of our mission.”

James previously served as the Chief Fiscal Officer at Elder Source, overseeing a $40 million budget for Northeast Florida. In this position, he managed the Fiscal and Programs Compliance Department with 19 staff members throughout 7 counties. He also worked as the Accountant Supervisor for the City of Jacksonville and Internal Auditor at the Jacksonville Electric Authority. James joined Operation New Hope as our Chief Financial Officer in the fall of 2022 and has been a great addition to the team.

We are excited for James to implement the skills he has learned from the Jim Moran Institute for Global Entrepreneurship Nonprofit Executive Program. We look forward to the impact it will have on our organization as we continue to build a Statewide Reentry Network.
