Celebrating New Beginnings: Space Coast Open House

Guests gather for a tour of Operation New Hope - Space Coast.

On Thursday, December 4th, Operation New Hope welcomed community members, partners, elected officials, and supporters to help celebrate our new Space Coast office in Cocoa during a very special Open House event.

Operation New Hope first expanded to the Space Coast in August 2023 to meet the needs of justice-impacted individuals in Brevard County — an area among the top 10 in Florida for prison releases. With demand quickly growing, our Space Coast team previously operated out of two adjacent buildings to serve participants. As of this September, we are proudly operating under one roof in a larger and more accessible location, offering a more seamless and centralized experience for clients while expanding our capacity to serve.

The evening was filled with meaningful conversations, new connections, and a shared commitment to creating second chances for returning citizens across Florida — especially here in Brevard County.

Guests had the opportunity to tour our newly relocated facility, meet members of our Space Coast team, and learn more about the transformative reentry services we provide, including career development training, employment services, transitional housing, and other critical wraparound supports that help break cycles of incarceration.

Throughout the event, our dedicated staff guided attendees through each program area, answered questions, and highlighted how Operation New Hope empowers individuals returning from incarceration to thrive personally and professionally — ultimately strengthening families, workplaces, and communities.

Community support was on full display, with representatives from local organizations, employer partners, law enforcement, Brevard County leaders, and donors joining us to explore ways to work together to reduce recidivism and expand economic opportunity throughout the region.

The opening of our new Space Coast office marks an important milestone as we continue our mission as Florida’s Statewide Reentry Network. Each month, thousands of individuals return home from prisons and jails, often facing overwhelming barriers to stability. With this expanded space, we are better equipped to welcome people home, increase access to essential reentry services, and support more individuals in building stable, successful lives right here on the Space Coast.

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who joined us for this celebration, and to all who continue championing second chances. Together, we’re proving that hope truly starts here.

From Hiring Partner to Workforce Leader: Melissa’s Journey with Operation New Hope

Melissa Riggins at Operation New Hope’s headquarters in Jacksonville, Florida.

When Melissa first connected with Operation New Hope more than a decade ago, she was looking for great employees. As a hiring manager at a Jacksonville construction company, she faced the same challenge many employers do — finding dependable, skilled team members who would show up, work hard, and grow with the company.

At the time, Melissa was meeting individuals struggling with homelessness, addiction, and reentry after incarceration. Having experienced the impact of incarceration within her own family, she deeply understood how it affects loved ones, but as an employer, she often felt unsure how to truly help.

That changed when she met Operation New Hope.

“Until I met Operation New Hope, I was losing faith in the process,” Melissa recalled. “But they restored that faith by showing what real second chances look like.”

Through Operation New Hope’s Ready4Work program, Melissa began hiring graduates who were rebuilding their lives after incarceration — and she quickly noticed a difference.

“The employees we hired from Ready4Work weren’t just qualified — they were motivated, loyal, and eager to succeed,” she said. “They brought so much value to our team.”

With the support of Operation New Hope’s staff, Melissa learned how to help employees navigate challenges that could arise on the job. Rather than letting someone go when issues occurred, a Job Coach would step in to provide guidance and equip the employee with tools for success. This hands-on collaboration helped participants maintain employment and thrive, while giving Melissa’s company the reliable workforce it needed.

Melissa became a strong believer in second chance hiring, seeing firsthand how it benefits both employees and employers. The results spoke for themselves; her company saw a 30% increase in repeat requests for Ready4Work employees, improved punctuality, fewer workplace accidents, and access to the Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) during a tough economic period. Most importantly, she saw lives transformed for employees, their families, and the business itself.

“Employers stopped referring to us as just a day labor service,” Melissa said. “They began to see us as a full-fledged staffing agency with people who were capable, consistent, and committed.”

A Full-Circle Moment

Years later, Melissa’s journey came full circle when she joined Operation New Hope as our Workforce Development Coordinator.

Now, she helps other employers experience the same benefits she once did. Instead of hiring Ready4Work graduates, she helps prepare them to enter the workforce. Melissa connects clients with meaningful jobs and equipping them with the tools they need to thrive in living-wage careers.

Her unique background means she knows exactly what employers are looking for, and how to match them with the right candidates. Her role bridges two worlds: she works closely with both employers and participants. For clients, she helps develop individualized career plans, strengthen interview skills, and identify industries where they can thrive. For employers, she serves as a trusted partner, helping them access WOTC and Federal Bonding programs, find qualified candidates, and create supportive workplaces that reduce turnover and increase retention.

“When companies partner with us, they aren’t just hiring someone who’s ready to work,” Melissa said. “They’re helping break cycles of poverty and incarceration. It’s the best business decision you can make for your company and your community.”

Melissa stands on the Employment Services floor at Operation New Hope.

Why Second Chance Hiring Works

Melissa’s experiences, both as an employer and as a staff member, have made her a passionate advocate for second chance hiring.

“Second chance hiring isn’t just a moral imperative — it’s smart economics,” she explained. “These are people who are motivated to rebuild their lives. They bring loyalty, commitment, and fresh perspectives to the workplace.”

She’s witnessed countless success stories, including one Ready4Work graduate who started in construction, completed an apprenticeship, earned a journeyman license, purchased a home, regained custody of their children, and now earns over $38 an hour.

“That’s what this program does,” Melissa said. “It helps people rebuild their lives, and helps employers gain some of their most dependable, driven employees.”

Building a Stronger Community Together

Today, Melissa continues to champion second chance hiring across Florida. She educates employers, shares her story, and reminds them that when they hire someone from Ready4Work, they gain an employee backed by a dedicated support team.

“Our staff work alongside both the employer and the participant to address challenges quickly, so the employer isn’t left on their own,” Melissa said. “That combination of motivation, structure, and support is what makes second chance hiring work.”

Her hope for the future is that second chance hiring becomes the norm — not the exception. “I envision a future where reentry programs are embraced as a standard part of workforce development,” she said. “When we focus less on punishment and more on reintegration, we all benefit. That’s how we build safer, stronger, and more prosperous communities.”

Improve Your Team & Organization

Celebrating Perseverance: Starleen’s Journey to Success

Vocational Training Partners such as Affordable Training are vital to client education and success.

At Operation New Hope, we believe in the power of resilience and dedication. Today, we’re thrilled to share the inspiring story of Ready4Work client, Starleen, who exemplifies the strength of perseverance.

Last year, Starleen received support from Operation New Hope to pursue a phlebotomy class. Despite her best efforts, she didn’t pass on her first attempt. But instead of giving up, Starleen displayed remarkable determination. She returned not once, not twice, but three times to take the class. Her commitment was unwavering—she paid for Uber rides, walked long distances, and made countless sacrifices to attend each session. Starleen’s hard work and relentless spirit paid off. Last week, she took her NHA exam and passed! We are incredibly proud to have been a part of Starleen’s journey and to witness her triumph.

This is why Second Chances Matter. They provide not only the opportunity for growth and change but also the profound sense of pride that comes from accomplishing what you set out to do. When you finally achieve your goal after overcoming obstacles, the feeling of self-accomplishment is unparalleled. Starleen’s story is a powerful reminder of the importance of perseverance and never giving up.

We extend our deepest gratitude to our partners in the vocational training community, such as Affordable Training, whose understanding and commitment play a crucial role in our clients’ successes. Your support is vital in helping individuals like Starleen reach their goals.

Empowering Success Through Vocational Training: The Ongoing Impact of the Ready4Work Program

Space Coast"s Ready4Work client, John.

At Operation New Hope, we are committed to providing our clients with the tools and resources they need to build sustainable careers and reintegrate into society. One of the core ways we fulfill this mission is through our Ready4Work program, which offers a range of support as well as vocational training opportunities designed to equip participants with valuable skills for the workforce.

Client Spotlight

Currently, two of our Ready4Work clients in Space Coast are enrolled in a 7-week welding certification class at Eastern Florida State College. This program is more than just a course; it’s a stepping stone toward a brighter future. One of these clients, John, has already set his sights on furthering his education by enrolling in the OSHA 10 construction certification upon completing his welding course. This enthusiasm for learning and professional growth is exactly what the Ready4Work program aims to foster.

Vocational Training: A Gateway to Opportunity

The welding certification course at Eastern Florida State College is just one of many vocational training opportunities available to our Ready4Work clients. We partner with educational institutions, trade schools, and certification programs to offer a wide array of training options tailored to the needs of our clients. Whether it’s in construction, culinary arts, welding, carpentry, or other in-demand fields, our goal is to provide training that leads directly to job opportunities.

How Ready4Work Supports Job Seekers

Ready4Work is not just about training; it’s about comprehensive support for our clients as they transition into the workforce. Our program includes:

  1. Personalized Career Coaching: Each client is paired with a career coach who helps them identify their strengths, interests, and career goals. Together, they create a personalized plan for success, which may include vocational training, resume building, and interview preparation.

  2. Job Placement Assistance: We work closely with local employers to connect our clients with job opportunities that match their skills and training. Our strong relationships with businesses in the community allow us to advocate for our clients and help them secure employment.

  3. Ongoing Support: Our commitment to our clients doesn’t end when they land a job. We continue to provide support through follow-up counseling and case management services, career mentoring, and additional training opportunities to ensure they stay on the path to success.

Building a Future Together

The success stories emerging from our clients are a testament to the impact of the Ready4Work program. By offering vocational training and comprehensive support, we are helping individuals like John not only build their skills but also their confidence and hope for the future.

We are excited to see our clients continue to grow and succeed as they take the next steps in their professional journeys!

Operation New Hope is supported by a grant from the Delores Barr Weaver Legacy Funds

At Operation New Hope, our mission has always been clear – to provide support, education, and opportunities for those seeking a second chance. Today, we are filled with immense gratitude to be supported by a grant from the Delores Barr Weaver Legacy Funds, a contribution that will significantly bolster our efforts in transforming lives and communities.

Delores Barr Weaver has an extraordinary legacy of philanthropy in Northeast Florida since moving to Jacksonville as co-owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars in 1993. Since her historic gift of $50 million in 2012 establishing the Delores Barr Weaver Legacy Fund, she has partnered with The Community Foundation on her philanthropy through numerous, multi-million dollar gifts, including the Foundation’s largest-ever gift of $61 million in 2023. She has established designated funds for more than four dozen nonprofits, including 20 that receive ongoing annual support through the Delores Barr Weaver Forever Event Fund, est. 2015. Today, her grantmaking exceeds $209 million, with support for more than 300 organizations in Northeast Florida and beyond.

The Community Foundation for Northeast Florida, Florida’s oldest community foundation, works to stimulate philanthropy to build a better community. The Foundation helps donors invest their philanthropic gifts wisely, helps nonprofits serve the region effectively, and helps people come together to make the community a better place. Since its inception in 1964, the Foundation has received more than $1 billion in gifts and made more than $750 million in grants.

As we look to the future, the generosity of the Delores Barr Weaver Legacy Funds and The Community Foundation for Northeast Florida fills us with hope and determination. We are committed to honoring their support by continuing to deliver impactful programs that change lives. Together, we will build a brighter, more inclusive future for everyone. Thank you for believing in our mission and for your help in paving the way for new beginnings and brighter tomorrows. We are deeply grateful and excited for the opportunities that lie ahead. Together, we can make a difference, one second chance at a time.

With sincere gratitude,

Operation New Hope Team

Voices of Hope Update- Crystal C. https://operationnewhope.org/voices-of-hope-update-crystal-c/ https://operationnewhope.org/voices-of-hope-update-crystal-c/#respond Thu, 16 May 2024 19:51:54 +0000 https://operationnewhope.org/?p=16681

Voices of Hope Update- Crystal C.

Founded in March 1999, Operation New Hope is celebrating our 25th anniversary this year, commemorating our legacy of transformative impact on the people and communities we serve. To mark this momentous occasion, we reached out to some of our former clients to see how they are doing now. Years after returning home, they are still applying what they have learned during their time here at Operation New Hope to achieve success and build a brighter future.

Here is Crystal’s Voices of Hope Update:

Looking back, what was the hardest thing about the first year after you were released?

“Reflecting on my first year, I recall a time filled with fear and uncertainty. Having spent the previous decade in prison, adjusting to newfound freedom was daunting.”

What are you up to now? Where are you working and how are you doing?

“Today, I proudly hold the position of Assistant Director of Operations at Camp Craft Cocktails. However, beyond my professional responsibilities, I devote my free time to serving as an inspiration to those who are incarcerated and striving to change societal perspectives.”

What have been the happiest moments since being released?
“Having the freedom to look down the road without seeing a fence is a profound feeling. Every day is a happy moment for me. Even if mentally or emotionally I’m at a low it’s about living through it and knowing that I have the power to decide my life.”

What have you learned about yourself in the time since going through the Ready4Work program?
“I am strong, smart, and intelligent. Ready4Work has taught me the importance of embracing my true self. I strive to be the leader I once needed and never feel ashamed of my past mistakes. They are part of my journey, shaping me into who I am today.”

What are your dreams and aspirations?
“My dream is to be the person who used her voice to help make change and pave the way for those who share my story.”

What achievements are you most proud of?
“My biggest achievement would be not only how far I’ve climbed the ladder in my profession, but also having the opportunity to return to a place where I was once incarcerated and bring hope to those beginning their journey to freedom. My greatest achievement is the positive impact I have on the lives of others.”

If you could change one thing about the criminal justice system, what would it be?
“We should strive to understand what led individuals to their actions and what can be done to help them become positive contributors to our community. It’s about addressing the root causes and providing support and opportunities for rehabilitation rather than solely focusing on punishment.”

What do you wish someone had told you about reentry?

Your past does not dictate your future. There’s something greater awaiting you. While the road ahead may not be easy, remember that everything is possible with determination and resilience.”

How did incarceration and reentry change you?

“Incarceration played a significant role in shaping the person I am today. Despite its challenges, it provided a unique opportunity for self-focus without the distractions of the outside world, allowing me to work on improving myself for the future. The journey of reentry was far from easy, but with the love and support I received from Operation New Hope, I was able to embrace my true self and express my full potential.”

What does HOPE mean to you?
“Hope is seeing your second chance to truly live again, to embrace opportunities and possibilities that lie ahead.”

How do you hope your story can inspire or support others?
“I hope my story can shine a light and inspire anyone embarking on their path to not only physical freedom but also mental and emotional freedom. If I can build a successful life in just six years after knowing only the life of prison, then I believe you can build a successful life too.”

Is there anything else you would like to share?
“Second Chances matter, and so do you.”

Crystal in 2024

Ready4Release Now Available at Clay County Jail https://operationnewhope.org/ready4release-now-available-at-clay-county-jail/ https://operationnewhope.org/ready4release-now-available-at-clay-county-jail/#respond Wed, 08 Nov 2023 19:42:06 +0000 https://operationnewhope.org/?p=14548

Ready4Release Now Available at Clay County Jail

In partnership with the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, Operation New Hope is pleased to announce that we will now be offering our Ready4Release Career Development Reentry Training program to people prior to release from the Clay County Jail. Our experienced team of reentry professionals will provide Employability Skills Training and individualized Case Management to people currently serving jail time in Clay County.

Operation New Hope and the Clay County Sheriff’s Office have a shared mission of helping people rehabilitate, successfully return to the workforce and our communities, and not reoffend. With over 24 years’ experience providing job readiness training and reentry services in Northeast Florida, Operation New Hope has been recognized as one of the most experienced and credible organizations in the country that provides reentry services.

We have now helped over 10,000 people reconnect to the workforce, their families, and our communities. Our work has been praised by the last four White House Administrations, as well as federal, state, and local representatives, law enforcement officers, and business leaders.

“We know that without results driven reentry programs that provide the skills needed to be successful at work after release, communities experience higher rates of crime, homelessness, unemployment, family instability and recidivism, all of which are drains on the local tax base and overall economy.

We are excited to now offer our reentry training and support to people before leaving the Clay County Jail so that they will gain the skills and motivation need to work towards a better life.”

said President and CEO Reggie Fullwood.

“This year alone, our jail population in Clay County has averaged over 470 inmates daily. We know the vast majority of those incarcerated in our county jail will serve their sentences and return to our community. By partnering with Operation New Hope, we hope to bring life-changing opportunities to incarcerated individuals…

…we must do our part to ensure that they become productive citizens once released. Participants in the Operation New Hope program will be provided job readiness skills and support to help them secure employment opportunities… It is important to know that the program is funded by the Inmate Welfare Fund, a fund whose purpose is to improve inmate work-readiness and reduce recidivism. We look forward to this Partnership with Operation New Hope.”

stated Sheriff Michelle Cook of the Clay County Sheriff’s Office. The Ready4Release Career Development Reentry Training program is set to launch on October 30, 2023, at the Clay County Jail.

We are so thankful for the partnership with the Clay County Sheriff’s Office and look forward to reporting on this innovative program’s impact.

3rd Annual Mulligans For Hope Highlights

Operation New Hope’s 3rd annual Mulligans for Hope Golf Tournament was a huge success! Over 100 golfers and volunteers enjoyed a beautiful day at Atlantic Beach Country Club while raising funds in support of second chances.

We extend our most sincere thanks to the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) of Jacksonville for being the Title Sponsor of the tournament. “We are proud to support Operation New Hope and all the work they do to help reconnect people with the workforce, their families and their communities,” said Randy Reaves, Jacksonville FOP President. “We believe in the support they provide and know that their organization has a positive impact on our community.”

“We are in the business of giving people mulligans,” said Operation New Hope’s President and CEO Reggie Fullwood. “Like in golf, the practice of granting a mulligan is a kind gesture to make good on an otherwise bad shot– an opportunity to correct after making a mistake. And we are so thankful to the FOP for their service to our community and for supporting our mission to offer people second chances. It speaks volumes when the police are investing in helping to break the cycle of incarceration.”

For nearly 25 years, Operation New Hope has worked to build a stronger community by creating opportunities for people with a criminal history to realize second chances by reconnecting to the workforce and their families. We believe that everyone deserves a mulligan and the support needed to rebuild their lives and know that everyone wins when you give a Second Chance!

Meet the Staff – RJ

Meet one of our Pre-release Case Managers – Ryan “RJ” James
