National Correctional Officers Week – Spotlight on Senior Classification Officer Engel

Operation New Hope has partnered with the Florida Department of Corrections for many years to deliver our Ready4Release and Ready4Work reentry programs. We are so thankful for their support of our mission to reconnect people with their communities, families, and the workforce. To show our thanks, we would like to showcase the work and talents of some of the Department of Corrections best employees during National Correctional Officers Week. And one exceptional officer who rises to the top in our book is Senior Classification Officer Herbert “Mo” Engel.

Our Ready4Release Program Manager, Corvus Whitaker has worked with Officer Engel for several years and says, “Mo always provides a lot of support in helping people succeed in reentry. He is always there to go the extra mile and help people. He’s just an all-around great guy, and I am fortunate to have the opportunity to work with him.”

We asked Officer Engel to tell us a little bit about himself for this spotlight piece, and this is what he said:

  • What is your job title? Senior Classification Officer
  • How long have you worked for the Department of Corrections? 14 years
  • What is your favorite thing about working at DOC? I enjoy being a State employee able to represent the Great State of Florida. I also like the camaraderie with my co-workers/staff members, the opportunity to assist offenders with re-entry resources/planning that are preparing for their release back into society, and partnering with Operation New Hope which is a huge resource for the Florida Department of Corrections and soon to be released offenders.
  • Tell us a little about yourself – family, hometown, hobbies, goals, fun-facts, etc.? I am married with 4 children – all boys. Our oldest is 24 and the youngest is 13. My hometown is Miami Beach Florida. My goals are to promote to Classification Supervisor with the aspiration of becoming a Warden. Fun facts… I am a huge Sports fan-College Football, NFL and Major League Baseball. I am a proud Veteran of the United States Air Force.
